Wagner's Pharmacy

tv show: Bizarre Foods America

Wagner's has been a staple for many Louisville folks for years and it is worth the trip to get some of the best biscuits and gravy around. Prices are cheap and if you like breakfast, you're gonna love this place. The people that work there are as friendly as can be and you'll get a perfectly cooked egg every time, any way you like it. If you go early, you will see lots of "horse people". That's Kentucky speak for horse trainers, jockey, etc.. It is located right across from the famous Churchill Downs race track. Closes around 2:00 p.m. but walk in the door before 1:30p because if the staff had a busy morning, they are gonna want to go home and you waiting until 1:35 to step in for lunch is uncool. Most of the time they will never let onto that though ; ) This place is an institution. Great place to take your kid when you are playing hookey for the day as well. They have a soda fountain so get him/her a yummy sugary soda while sharing a Pam & Jacks Omlette! Oh, and sit at the bar so you can hear the cook whistle or sing. That's Kentucky for ya!

Old Hickory Pit Bar-B Q

tv show: Bizarre Foods America

Now that I've moved away from Owensboro I crave Old Hickory even more! Their barbecue is the best I've ever had. It doesn't matter what type of meat you get there, it is ALL delicious. My favorites are the chopped mutton and the barbecued chicken but occasionally we get the sliced turkey. We always get sides as well and those are good, although they do pale in comparison to the meat itself, but no one should be going to a barbecue joint for the sides, should they? We rarely eat in, so the drive-thru is quick, efficient and kind of loud, but accurate! And they are mostly friendly although not the chattiest bunch of kids. They are very busy though, so you have to consider that.

Morris Delicatessen

tv show: Bizarre Foods America

It never fails, when I come home to visit it is a must to come to Morris'. Most of their meats are smoked in house, the sides and soups are made in house as well. There is a great selection of chips, beverage and soups. Sandwiches are made to order and you can get basically any sandwich you want! The chicken salad is so yummy I almost slap myself. My son loves their kid ham and cheese and the kid is 2. If you could see how he devours a sandwich, you would understand the amount of deliciousness that I'm trying to convey here. Seating in limited but thats ok. They have a great selection of spirits, wines and beer. The beer walk in used to be a ice house back in the day. if you don't see what you want, just ask, chances are they have it. I heart Morris' Deli, I heart it so much I wish I could just pick is up and move it to Nashville with me. There is a reason why it's been there so long and there is a constant stream of locals and old timers who eat there. The staff are all very friendly and know so many people by name. Morris' makes me feel like "home"

A friend of mine wanted to check this out for lunch instead of eating the conference food. So, we trecked several blocks and found the restaurant to be a bit "Artsy"? Not complaining though. The service was absolutely wonderful. The host and waiter were very nice. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad (w/o anchovies). It was delicious! The salad wasn't drowning in dressing. You'll also be asked if you'd like some bread--delish. Oh, and my friend had Pumpkin Soup. This was wonderful as well. If you make your way to the bathroom, look to your right passed the museum and where there are a set of elevators. Look at the wall. There are letters dropping down and you can virtually "catch" them and make words. It sounds a bit strange, but it's a fun little game and brings out the kid in you. I would definitely go there again.

Garage Bar

tv show: Bizarre Foods America

Garage Bar is housed in a former auto service garage in downtown Louisville’s vibrant East Market or NuLu neighborhood. A nod to its roots as a historic saloon, Garage Bar serves up ice cold draft and bottled craft beers, Kentucky Bourbons, seasonal cocktails and wine. The casual neighborhood spot features Chef Michael Paley’s pizzas from a wood-fired brick oven and Southern specialties, with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients.

Smokey Valley Truck Stop

tv show: Diners Drive-Ins and Dives

As far as "smokey" (the name fits) restaurants, it wasn't nearly as bad as most Olive Hill restaurants are- I'm pretty sure over 80% of Olive Hill's population smokes. The only reason it's not higher is because I'm including infants.

J.J. McBrewster's American Smokehouse

tv show: Diners Drive-Ins and Dives

We searched this out because of DDD and it was quite a drive from our hotel so we had high hopes. My husband had the pork tenderloin and I had chicken. Both were good, as well as the cole slaw.

Rick's White Light Diner

tv show: Diners Drive-Ins and Dives

Wow, what a jewel. Not only is the food great. Not ONLY is the owner a cheerful and/or curmudgeonly former hippy or maybe biker. Not ONLY is it tiny, seating only about 20. It's also the only place I've been in awhile where you can have a fairly decent bottle of beer with breakfast. 10 stars out of 5!

The Parkette Drive-in

tv show: Diners Drive-Ins and Dives

It's a classic drive-in, not a gourmet food vendor. Don't overdo the expectations. It's awesome as a nostalgic American drive-in.

We were pleasantly surprised by the interior, and particularly liked the paintings from a local artist that were everywhere.

Wallace Station

tv show: Diners Drive-Ins and Dives

Decided to go back to Wallace Station for lunch today. Wow they do not disappoint. I went for something different this time. The Bourbon Trail Triple Crown. Turkey, bacon, cheddar and etc. on toasted wheat. It was so huge that I had to cut it into smaller pieces just to eat and only ate half at that. Served with a pickle and chips at $8.50 it was a bargain. I took the other half home and I'll have it for super.

The Brown Hotel

tv show: Man v. Food Nation

Old school southern charm best describes The Brown Hotel. Amazing service, staff, atmosphere and food. Sweet Potato fries were to die for. My only suggestion is Red Bull at the bar :)

The Comfy Cow

tv show: Man v. Food Nation

When I walked in, it smelled like heaven! Well, my heaven at least...that sweet ice cream parlor smell that I could live in for the rest of my life! I wanted to try every flavor they had, but I ended up trying the minty chocolate chippy and the dulce de leche de salte (salted caramel). They were both amazing! I love everything about this place, yummy ice cream, great service and cute decor! I think it's worth a stop in if you're in Louisville.

Hey, what's not to like? When entertaining, the decor helps move the conversation along, and keeps me from having to think of something to say - all I have to do is look up, or around for inspiration.
