Harry’s Place

Harry’s Place was opened by Harry Shmuckler of Salem in 1920 near the Colchester town green, and was moved twice before settling into its current location on Broadway. Athough its second owner, Ruby Cohen is best remembered as “Harry”.

Ruby owned the business for over forty years, having worked for Harry as a teenager and buying the hot dog stand in the 30’s. Ruby was a State Representative and was “credited” with blocking route 2 from being built until the early seventies. Ruby sold the business in 1978 to John Garet and Harry’s is still owned and operated by the Garet Family.

Siblings John Garet and Suzanne Caruso still operate the “Stand” in a manner which brings customers back to times gone bye.
