LINCOLN CAFE

tv show: Bizarre Foods America

This is my consistently favorite fine dining experience in the Iowa City / Cedar Rapids area. A 30 minute drive from Iowa city, you'll find the small cafe. The decor is not very enticing, but it is quaint. However, every night there are 3 entrees and three desserts offered, and these are some of the best meals you'll get. Locally sourced food, interesting combinations (granted, some don't always work out), and super creative.

B AND B GROCERY

tv show: Bizarre Foods America

I decided to try this place out after seeing that their "Dad's Killer Sandwich" won the award for Best Sandwich in Des Moines. So I headed over there on my lunch break. First off, one of the above reviews is correct, there is a musty/old odor in the air. I don't necessarily think it's from mold or moisture as much as it is from the place being so old. It's been in the neighborhood for decades.

High Life Lounge

tv show: Man v. Food

My dad and I found the High Life Lounge on a cross country road trip from Connecticut to LA using 'TV Food Maps' a random android app I found that is a database of restaurants featured on TV. Knowing that we were driving through Des Moines during lunch time on our way to Omaha from Chicago, the app gave us a few choices. We went with this one, and could not have made a better call.

Black Market Pizza

tv show: Man v. Food

Just dropped $27 on a 3-topping "Chicago Style" pie. My wife and I are in agreement that things have actually improved here from our previous visits. The pie we got was probably the best we've received from here in the years since we've start patronizing this north-side pizza place.

Jethro's BBQ

tv show: Man v. Food

Honestly I was oblivious that Mr. Richman fought against food at Jethro's. Spoiler alert x], but I found out that Jethro won, with picture proof of the results posted right after the entrance to this sports-oriented, Iowan BBQ "pit."

Cactus Bob's BBQ Corral

tv show: Outrageous Food

Cactus Bob's is one of our favorite local BBQ's joints. Amazing food for a great price. I'm especially in love with their Chuckwagon sandwich, the baked beans, and the pickles. Oh the pickles-sweet with a little heat-so good!

El Bait Shop

tv show: Sandra Lee's Taverns, Lounges & Clubs

This was quite possibly love at first sight! Everyone knows how much I love beer, and this is an amazingly wonderful place, especially for Downtown DSM. The decor is quirky and cute without trying too hard (unlike High Life Lounge next door). I love the wrestling hall of fame near the front door - so random!

Ox Yoke Inn

tv show: Food Paradise

Make it a point to drive a little further and have yourself a wonderful family style meal. Parking is no problem due to the large parking lot out back. I have only been here for lunch and dinner but it always puts a big smile on my face and I enjoy the family dining aspect of the meal. I usually get the wiener schnitzel which is simply delicious. My favorite sides happen to be the corn and the cottage cheese with green onions mixed in.

JETHRO

tv show: United States of Bacon

My wife and I come here about once a month. We are not BBQ fanatics but that is one of the best things about he place- they have a little bit of everything. The wings are probably the my favorite thing on the menu with the Carolina Burger shortly behind.

KELLY

tv show: United States of Bacon

Kelly's Little Nipper is a total dive, and an amazing find. From what I understand this place has been around since the '40's and is housed in a former grocery store. It was started by a guy called Nipper, and bought by a guy called Kelly. The new owners haven't added their name, and they haven't changed the menu. If anything, it sounds like the food has gotten even better. This is a local bar through and through--a juke box, a pool table in the center, regulars on the stools and lots of beer being drunk. But here's the thing: Kelly's Little Nipper is one of the best kept food secrets in Des Moines.
