tv show: The Layover

Outstanding meal. We went post-show and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great wine list of small producers, staff was knowledgeable about the wines and how they might pair with the meal.

The atmosphere is awesome and reminiscent of a lounge. There's one huge screen playing KPop music videos and a few smaller ones airing sports games. We came with a huge group and ordered one of everything off the menu.

Czerw's Kielbasy

tv show: The Layover

Coming from a Polish family in New Jersey, pierogies have always been a staple at our Xmas eve dinners. My grandparents would buy them from the polish ladies who made them in the church basement, and our meal would also include some kielbasa from the butcher, and home made stuffed cabbage. In a recent year, the church basement had water damage, and the pierogie making equipment was compromised, and we went elsewhere... and they were not the same. I learned that it's hard to produce a perfect pierogie.

Zahav

The space instantly transports you to Jerusalem, it's so lovely. The lights, the stone work, the stained glass all create an atmosphere somewhere far away from Philly. The fact that it's raised on a hillside helps support the illusion.

Capogiro Gelato

tv show: Chuck's Eat the Street

Pricey for sure, but definitely worth it. It's less crowded and busy than some of the other locations, and is located smack in the middle of UPenn's campus, with City Tap House, the Rave movie theater, and some other fantastic places nearby.

Penn Brewery

tv show: United States of Bacon

Welcome to Penn Brewery, where our craft beers, homemade fare, and historic setting tell the story of Pittsburgh’s European immigrant heritage. Although the modern-day Penn Brewery was started in 1986, its roots actually lie far back in 1848, with the Eberhart and Ober families, Germans who settled in the Deutschtown neighborhood in the City of Allegheny, now Pittsburgh’s NorthSide. Eberhart and Ober opened three breweries on the site where Penn exists today, and three of the original E&O brewery buildings remain. These buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boast many fascinating and unique architectural features. Perhaps the most notable of these is a labyrinth of stone caves and tunnels which was constructed to chill, or “lager,” barrels of beer in the days before refrigeration became commonplace.

Harris Grill

Went for the first time today. Kitchen was just wrapping up a re-model, but they extended happy hour to accommodate and the food was pretty darn good. The happy hour specials were a great deal and the staff was really nice. Also love that the patio is in the shade all afternoon/evening. Great summer spot.

Winghart's Burger & Whiskey Bar

tv show: United States of Bacon

Welcome to our restaurant. My name is Zachary Winghart, and I am a Pittsburgh native who trained at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute not three blocks from our Market Square location. After school I traveled the country, experiencing all types of cuisine. From Fois gras to lobster stuffed flounder, I've had it all, but my favorite meat is a burger. As I am a certified butcher, we grind our chunk roll fresh everyday. So you can be assured you are getting the freshest burger in town. I know you will love it as much as I do. Thanks for stopping in.

MCNALLY

tv show: United States of Bacon

This is a great bar to do some drinking, inside is kept clean at all times and its all local people so there is usually never any trouble. They have a atm machine some arcade games and a back seating area that is always open with a dart board. They also have food that you would think would be gross but is actually really good. So if your lookin for a chill spot without the loud music and all the punks this is a good place to go.

Jakes Sandwich Board

tv show: United States of Bacon

After giving the GF's brother and cousin a cold, blistering tour of Philadelphia's historical sites, we had to stop for a cheese steak. Would we go to Jim's? Pat's? Geno's? No thanks. I knew if there was any place that could redeem Philadelphia by providing a decent Philly's Best type cheese steak - it would be Jake's Sandwich Board.
