Robert Hunter wrote, ” Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.” For some reason that Scarlet Begonias lyric came to mind this past Friday afternoon when I stepped out of Alex’s Tavern having just enjoyed their amazing Greek Burger. I suppose it was because Alex’s was the last place in Memphis I thought a Grail burger would be served. Alex’s, located just east of Jackson Avenue and North Watkins, is owned by Rocky Kasaftes. Rocky’s father, Alex, opened Alex’s in 1953 and it remains the oldest family owned tavern in Memphis.

The original Billy Goat Tavern location was "born" in 1934 when Greek immigrant, William "Billy Goat" Sianis, purchased the Lincoln Tavern. Billy Goat bought the tavern for $205, with a check that bounced but was later repaid with sales from the first weekend. The tavern was located across from the Chicago Stadium (now United Center) and attracted mainly sports fans. Sianis became known as "Billy Goat," when a goat fell off a passing truck and wandered inside. Sianis adopted the goat, grew a goatee, acquired the nickname "Billy Goat," and changed the name of the bar to the Billy Goat Tavern.

Bode's started as Grants Mercantile in 1890 as a general store, post office, stage coach stop and jail. The King of Spain gave the post office and jail to the Grant Brothers from New York. The Grants were successful merchants who owned three general stores that are still in business in Northern New Mexico. In the early 1900s, the Grants sold their stores to the Gonzales and Sargent families and moved to Santa Fe where they were involved in the process of making New Mexico a State.

In New Orleans for any reason? Looking for seafood? Oysters? Oysters?!? Please tell me you love oysters. Especially raw oysters. Then Bozo's is your place. I remember visiting this place since I was 3 years old. Growing up in the New Orleans suburb of Mandeville, Bozo's was and still is the place to go for oysters, both raw and fried. Even though it was a 30+ minute drive across Lake Pontchartrain, nothing could compare. Please, please, please treat yourself to some of the beautiful shellfish they offer (if you are lucky enough to get some before they sell out). Truly one of the best Cajun seafood spots you will find, and a local hangout at its best.

I had an omelet with onions, avocado, cheese, and sprouts- first time I have ever had sprouts or avocado on an omelet, which is really surprising considering the fact that I love both of these foods and I enjoy making my own omelets at home. The creamy goodness of the avocado made the omelet! My husband had the french toast with strawberries and it was the best damn french toast we've had ever in our lives!

This place is absolutely THE best sports bar in Midtown and the burgers alone make it worth the trip if you don't live in the area. Great place for college football on the weekends and Monday Night Football if you don't feel like watching it at home. I imagine that on Super Bowl Sunday this place will be packed but it's where we'll likely be to watching the big game! Would like to eventually try some other stuff on their menu but can't imagine that anything could possibly be better than the burgers! Just typing about it is making me want another.

Back in 1912, the late Elmer "Doc" Dyer opened his own cafe and began to develop a secret cooking process for the uniquely delicious world famous burgers we still serve here today on Beale Street. Legend has it that the "secret" was Doc Dyer's ageless cooking grease. This famous grease , strained daily, has continued to produce our juicy Dyer's Burgers for almost a century now. One of "Doc's" original employees, Mr. Kahn Aaron bought the establishment in 1935 and continued the Dyer's name and tradition of famous burgers. The Dyer's legacy continues to this day. Over the years, this famous cooking grease has been transported to our various Memphis locations under the watchful protection of armed police escorts, finally settling here on Historic Beale Street, Home of the Blues and World Famous Dyer's!
