Porto's Bakery

tv show: $24 in 24

I love a good bakery. The bigger the selection, the better. The only thing that I want to be bigger than the selection is the line. Say what you want about the wisdom of the crowd, but I've never been done wrong by a bakery with a line out the door.

Tofu Ya

tv show: $24 in 24

The storefront is very small & can get crowded during peak dinner hours, but they do a pretty solid job of bringing everything out quickly and making sure the restaurant was high turnover rate. I'm drawing a blank on how good the service is which is, in my opinion, pretty much the highest compliment you can give to an Asian restaurant.

Zelda's Corner

Bomb diggity! Just ate here for lunch. Try the "Sidwhich." Made one happy customer out of the picky eater that I am. And get the mini donuts! Not a huge donut fan but these were a great decision-was going to save some for the friend I'm staying with, but I ate em all! lol. Cool seeing them made right in front of you.

Papa Cristo's

tv show: $24 in 24

Papa Cristo is a restaurant/store serving truly authentic Greek cuisine. They offer sandwiches, plates, hot/cold appetizers, and salads. The sandwiches are truly the way to go here. They are HUGE and give you a bit of everything. Just pick from a choice of meats and they will serve it with a nice helping of Greek salad all wrapped up in a garlic pita. The creamy tzatziki sauce on the side is a MUST! I ordered the chicken breast ($6.99) and the boyfriend had the donor ($6.99). Really can't go wrong with either!

Phil's BBQ

tv show: Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America

I have been a loyal fan of Phil's since I lived in Mission Hills eons ago. The food was wonderful then. I moved to the upstate of South Carolina for a couple of years, and returned to San Diego. Had BBQ in the South. Real BBQ - slow smoked in smokers....had 'em in rual and urban cities. All were wonderful. Came back to San Diego, craved BBQ and realized..this is GRILLING. Pre cooked ribs, slathered with BBQ sauce at the end. So...I still give it three stars. Phil's is still good, but....the South has the best BBQ hands down.

tv show: Adam Richman's Best Sandwich in America

I'm a sucker for going to places featured on Travel Channel - this place is good but best sandwich in America...eh not sure. Good enough to keep in the rotation of places I will eat at on Saturdays when I drive into work or have a craving for pulled pork BBQ.

Best dinner i've had in over a year. The plate of pork was simply amazing. The pork belly was so carmelized and crisp that it stuck to the molars like candy. The loin was equally impressive. My wife got the rock cod and the smokiness with the veggies was unreal. Also the scotch egg... delicious and amazing appetizer.

When it comes to macarons (note: not macaroons), you can't beat Miette Patisserie, especially not at these prices. Consider that making these airy little sandwich cookies yourself might be the world's biggest pain in the ass, and then consider that you can buy them for less than $2 each, where they come in a nice waxed bag with a cute sticker. Buy four and they come in an adorable, elegant little box.

The Donut Man

tv show: America's Best

Like a majority of other people said: strawberry donuts!!! It's such a shame that tonight I came when the strawberries were not in season... but when I did have them, they were the most delicious things EVER! As far as donuts go, I think the strawberry donuts are one of the best donuts I've had. Super fresh, tangy, sweet, soft... mm. Wish they were in season all year long. Peach one is okay, I prefer strawberries.

I went to Ink as well. They are similar, but very different. One thing I appreciate about Chef Andres is that he takes the familiar and then applies abstraction to attack your senses, sensibilities, and taste buds with a new idea of what something should or could taste like.

Excellent, thoughtful, extra special food from start to finish. Complex, original and beautifully executed. The crab bisque with dungeoness crab cake and vanilla oil? MY GOD. At one point in the meal, I actually just started giggling. It was so good, I literally started giggling like a school girl.

La Taqueria

tv show: America's Best

It wasn't too long until I had a burrito craving, and then it was time to check this place out. The line wasn't nearly as long as El Farolito - only about two or three people long. I actually got my food surprisingly quickly. And it was a bit on the expensive side ($8-something for what amounted to a super burrito). They even put it in a paper bag when I asked for it "to go" (more on that later).

While waiting for my friend at the bar, the bartender wanted to know what I wanted to drink. Seeing that I don't drink I declined, but he then suggested that he can make me a mocktail that I'l love. He did, paid $5 bucks for it, still don't know what was in it. But thanks.

Tortas Ahogadas el Gallito

tv show: Bizarre Foods America

Whatever your reasoning for not adoring such a masterpiece of a fine "wet tortas" (Estilo Guadalajara) served at this torta truck, then you are missing out. If you are from the South Bay, you probably know of them which are right off the 5 South and Industrial Blvd.

I finally convinced my fiancé to try this place after I got off work on Friday night. This place stuck out for me because my boyfriend loves lamb! I don't think I saw the episode where it was featured with Andrew Zimmern BUT I did hear them being on featured on Jagger and Kristi's morning show a few months back so I knew we had to try it, especially since we live less than five minutes away.
